CHAPTER 8

DITCH FEAR AND CELEBRATE FAILURE

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

—THEODORE ROOSEVELT1

Looking back to the year I lost my mom, I was able to view life differently than when she was alive. I became a different skater because I became a different person. I think the biggest difference was that I wasn’t scared anymore. The worst thing that could happen to me had already happened, and now I was playing with greater purpose. What will it take for you to decide that you’re more afraid of staying stuck than you are of what it will take to become a winner?

Deep inside we know what winning requires of us. We know that it’s not a one-time event, but it’s something we have to keep living up to over and over and over again. And rather than face the challenge of that, many of us sabotage our own success before we even get there.

There isn’t a champion out there who doesn’t struggle with the same insecurities you have. I’ll never forget, after winning the World Championship, I felt that skating must be at its lowest point in history if I was the champion, and I needed to “up my game” now. My coach Don Laws recognized my insecurities immediately and knew this was going to be an even greater challenge to deal with than winning the World Championship. The way we see ourselves is often different than the way others see us. Don needed me to see that the World Championship was just another event. If I didn’t win it, somebody else would.

Every champion wonders if he has what it takes. It’s a very human thing. But this doesn’t stop us from being hungry and aggressive—ready to do our work. That’s what I want to help you understand. The process of becoming a champion is not rocket science. Champions are all people.

They’re just people who have been willing to get past their fears and doubts because they’re tired of being losers and are ready to win.
